Luis Fernando Díaz Marulanda was born on 13 January 1997 in Barrancas. His parents are Luis Manuel Díaz and Silenis Marulanda.
Barrancas is a small community of about 38,000 inhabitants located near the border with Venezuela. The area is known to many only for El Serrejón, the largest open-pit coal mine in Latin America. The mine consumes a huge amount of water, and locals call it a “monster”.

The drama of the kidnapping in October 2023
In October 2023, Luis Díaz’s life was brutally turned upside down. Luis Díaz’s parents, Luis Manuel Díaz and Silenis Marulanda, were kidnapped at a petrol station in their hometown of Barrancas. Armed men on motorbikes kidnapped the football star’s parents.
The National Liberation Army (ELN), a left-wing guerrilla movement, was responsible. Although the police managed to free Díaz’s mother in just one day, his father remained in captivity for longer. The kidnapping caused a stir in Colombia, and even the military joined the case. Colombian President Gustavo Petro had previously stated that all state forces would be involved in the search. In the end, everything turned out well for Luis Diaz’s family: after 13 days in captivity, his father Luis Manuel was released by his captors.
